RHAPSODY IN SCHOOL initiates and organizes school projects based
on an
IDEA PROPOSED BY LARS VOGT- inspired and supported, in turn,
by "Kinder zum Olymp", an initiative of the German
Länder Foundation of the Arts (Kulturstiftung der Länder).
THE SITUATION
"Classical music tends to be increasingly lacking among
the resources children should absorb from a family environment"
(Lars Vogt). As a result, young children and teenagers are often
"afraid" of having anything to do with the world of
classical music. Concert halls and opera houses are worried
about losing future generations of appreciative audiences.
OUR AIM
Thanks to direct contact with world-renowned artists who are
also enthusiastic communicators, children and adolescents
finally become inspired to nurture and develop their interest
for classical music. The ideal venue for such encounters to
take place is where they spend considerable time together
with their peers - e.g. in secondary, primary schools and
even in nursery schools.
PUTTING THE PROJECT INTO PRACTICE
In their free time during their stay in a town for a performance,
world-class musicians visit a kindergarten, or a primary or
secondary school. They can rehearse there, or they can visit
schoolclasses where they play their instrument and enter in
dialogue with the schoolchildren, encouraging active participation.
PARTICIPANTS
Musicians, schools (teachers and pupils), in cooperation with
the German Länder Culture Foundation initiative "Kinder
zum Olymp".
VENUES
Schools all over Germany and in Vienna; eventually, performance
venues such as concert halls, theatres and opera houses
PROJECT MANAGEMENT : SABINE VON IMHOFF
German schools outside of Germany, as well as in multilingual
schools in different countries
PROJECT MANAGEMENT : ERNESTINE VARGA
TIMES
During school hours; before or after a concert; during the
musician's rehearsal time
FUTURE PROSPECTS
With its current focus on music and musicians, this project
can be regarded as a prototype for other ventures. Later on,
the same approach could be applied to further artistic domains
such as literature, theatre and the visual arts.
